Drawing Near To Him
I am profoundly reminded this morning (via my 4 year old) about the kind of intimately close relationship I desire to have with Jesus. Lately Levi has been struggling any time there is a separation from me, his mom or his brother. He’s beginning to understand what it feels like when one of us isn’t around when he wants us around. It even pops up when we’re simply in different rooms of the house than he is.
This morning Levi and I were both sitting at the kitchen table together having a snack - me on my laptop typing this note to you, and he on his iPad playing one of his many games. My laptop warned me that the battery was about to die, so I closed the lid, made some breakfast and headed into my office to continue my work.
After about 5 minutes, I hear Levi call out from the kitchen.
“Dad? Daddy? Where are you?”
“I’m in my office Buddy”, I called back.
He then said, with a noticeable quiver in his voice, “I need you.”
“I’m right here in my office, Bud, you’re alright.”
“No, no. I need you! I neeeeed you!”
By this time, I can hear the sound of his bare feet running towards the office. When he finally turned the corner, iPad in hand and his lower lip out, he uttered the most profound truth,
“I need you. To hear you. To be near you.”
I’m broken.
My boy perfectly and naturally expressed the kind of intimacy we should all LONG for with our Heavenly Father. We NEED him. To HEAR his voice. To be NEAR to him.
But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. - Psalm 73:28
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. - James 4:8a
So be encouraged today. Have a song on your heart today as you go about the day (I’m singing “Good & Gracious King by City Alight). Be committed to drawing near to him, rejoicing in all that he has done and all that he is doing.
